Recreational Kayak Accessories

Recreational kayaking can be a great way to pass the time, get exercise, or really adventure. It is important to have the correct items associated with your boat to ensure that you have the comfortable experience that you hope to have. Here are a couple of items that you may want to incorporate into your boat so that your trips become more enjoyable and efficient.

First of all, paddle clips are a great addition to your kayak. Paddle clips allow you to clip your paddle to the top of your kayak, leaving your hands free to fish, take pictures, splash a friend, or change layers of clothing. These clips are typically very cheap ($5-$15) and very simple to install. All you need to do is drill a couple of tiny holes in the kayak, and then screw the clips in. Viola! Your hands are now free.

Another item that you might want to consider when going out in your kayak is a floating dry box. This type of box allows you to bring along your keys, wallet, cell phone, MP3 player, or any other small items that you don't want getting wet. You can also paddle knowing that these items won't sink, because if you get the proper dry box, it will keep your items afloat in the water.

Something else that may be useful is a bilge pump. A bilge pump is a simple hand-operated water pump that you can keep in the compartment of your boat to remove any unwanted water from the bottom of your kayak. These are not very expensive and are worth the investment. Also, if you really want the bottom of your kayak to be bone dry, get a hold of a sponge as well to soak up any small amounts of water that may be sloshing around your seat.

Additional deck rigging might be a help as well, for those who are planning on spending more time in their kayaks. This rigging is typically elastic and very simple in concept. All you need to do is anchor the elastic bands across the deck of the kayak, and you've got some pretty handy ways to hold down items like tents, camel packs, containers, or extra clothing.

Finally, one accessory that will help you a lot is an interior shelf or pocket. You can either make one of these on your own if you are handy, or they can be picked up at different stores if you keep an eye out for them. A small pocket or shelf inside of the kayak will enable you to keep things with you in the cockpit, whether it is snacks, water, a book, or binoculars. The pocket will keep you from having to swivel around in your seat to reach the rear compartment, or risking dropping items in the water while pulling at the elastic rigging.
